Types of 9 kW Solar Systems in India and Their Prices

The three main types of solar systems you’ll come across are on-grid, off-grid, and hybrid. On-grid solar systems are connected to the grid, not lead-acid or lithium batteries. An off-grid solar system, on the other hand, is connected to a battery bank rather than the grid. And a hybrid solar system is connected to both batteries and the grid.

Here’s the cost comparison between the three types:

Types of 9 kW Solar Systems Cost of a 9 kW Solar System in India in 2025*
On-grid solar systems Ranges between ~Rs. 4.02 lakh in Lucknow, ~Rs. 4.12 lakh in Delhi, ~Rs. 4.32 lakh in Pune, and ~Rs. 4.92 lakh in Bangalore with subsidy.

Here’s a side-by-side comparison between the three types of solar systems:

Aspect 9 kW On-Grid Solar Systems 9 kW Off-Grid Solar Systems 9 kW Hybrid Solar Systems
Are they connected to the grid? Yes No Yes
Do they require lead-acid or lithium batteries to store excess solar energy for nighttime use?  No Yes Yes
How do they work? Excess solar energy generated by the panels during the day flows to the grid. When the panels aren’t working at night, electricity is drawn from the grid to keep your appliances running as usual. Excess solar energy is used to charge lithium batteries through a solar panel charge controller, usually built-in within the off-grid solar inverter. This stored energy powers the load at night. In hybrid solar systems, surplus daytime energy charges the battery bank, just as in off-grid PV systems. And when the DISCOM approves solar net metering in a city, excess energy after the batteries are full is sent to the grid.
Are they eligible for a solar subsidy in India under the PM Surya Ghar scheme?  Yes No Only if the DISCOM allows net metering.

What’s the 9 kW Solar System Cost in India with Solar Loans?

Gone are the days when you had to pay the entire sum from your own pocket upfront to install a rooftop solar system in your house. Thanks to solar loans offered by banks and NBFCs, rooftop solar installation in India has become super affordable. One such solar scheme is SolarSquare’s zero-investment plan

If you’re unwilling to pay the down payment from your own pocket, here’s why our zero-investment plan is ideal for you:

  • You can say goodbye to upfront out-of-pocket investment: The government subsidy you receive offsets the down payment, ensuring you do not pay money upfront out of your own pocket.
  • Quick loan processing: Once you apply, your loan can be approved in just 24 hours.
  • You can choose an EMI tenure matching your monthly bills: You can choose an EMI plan that matches what you used to pay for electricity. SolarSquare lets you pick a repayment tenure from 6 months to 5 years. The goal is to help you keep your monthly EMI close to or even lower than your old electricity bill, so your budget stays balanced from day one.

How Many Panels are in a 9 kW Solar System?

The number of solar panels you need will actually depend on the solar panel wattage. For instance, it would take ~17 540-watt solar panels and ~28 330-watt solar panels to build a 9 kW solar system. Lower-wattage solar panels are no longer used in India ever since high-wattage half-cut solar panels like TOPCon and mono-PERC have arrived.

Here’s the simple formula you can use to calculate the number of solar panels needed:

Number of solar panels = System capacity (in watts) ÷ the module capacity (in watts)

Based on this formula, here’s how we ended up with ~17 solar panels:

Aspect Details
Desired system capacity 9 kW or 9,000 watts
Module capacity 540Wp
Calculation based on the formula 9,000 ÷ 540 = ~16.6
Number of solar panels required for a 9 kW solar system ~17

Is a 9 kW Solar System Good for Homes?

A 9 kW solar system is worthwhile for extremely large 5-6 BHK homes, bungalows, and villas, where the yearly power consumption is between 12,600 and 13,050 units. This much power can run multiple air conditioners, televisions, fans, lights, geysers, coolers, refrigerators, washing machines, and every other common home appliance that you can think of.

Let’s walk you through the first-year unit generation you can expect from a 9 kW solar system in your city:

City Electricity Units Generated by a 9 kW On-grid Solar System During the 1st year*
Pune ~12,420 units
Bhopal ~12,870 units
Lucknow ~11,790 units
Jaipur ~13,140 units
Ahmedabad  ~13,680 units
Bangalore  ~12,870 units
Hyderabad ~12,690 units
Delhi  ~11,970 units

*Please note: The generation figures mentioned above are approximate and meant for general reference only. Actual output can vary from these estimates due to multiple factors, including pollution levels in your city, changes in sunlight availability, weather patterns, roof angle, panel orientation, shading from surrounding objects, and dust accumulation. Technical elements, such as solar panel efficiency, inverter performance, wiring quality, and system losses, can also impact generation levels. Even routine maintenance and regional temperature fluctuations can affect the amount of power your system produces over time.

What are the Benefits of installing a 9 kW On-Grid Rooftop Solar System in India?

Installing a 9 kW solar system means you’ll get free solar electricity for 25 years. It will lower your electricity bills by 90% or more, saving tens of lakhs of rupees over the system’s entire lifespan.

Let’s check out all the benefits that a 9 kW on-grid solar system offers in detail:

  • It’s the most affordable option: An on-grid solar system is connected to the grid, not batteries. Hence, it’s cheaper than off-grid and hybrid solar systems. It’s perfect for metro cities where power cuts are rare, making battery backup unnecessary. However, if power cuts are frequent in your area, you should consider a hybrid or off-grid solar system to provide backup during outages.
  • It reduces your electricity bills by more than 90%, making them near zero for many: Since the solar system generates enough electricity to cover all your home energy requirements, you will no longer need expensive grid electricity. This will lower your bills substantially.
  • It can address air pollution in India: A 9 kW rooftop solar system is equivalent to planting 353 full-grown trees. Do you know how much carbon dioxide these many trees absorb in 25 years? ~2,33,000 kg! That’s exactly the amount of carbon a 9 kW solar system stops from releasing in the atmosphere over its 25-year life by using clean and non-polluting solar radiation to generate electricity.

Why Choose SolarSquare’s 9.18 kW Solar System?

Building a 9 kW solar system using low-wattage solar panels, such as a 330-watt module, is no longer a choice, as high-wattage 540-watt panels have become the standard. However, when you use a 540-watt panel to build a 9 kW system, it would require 16.6 solar panels (9,000 ÷ 540 = 16.6). Since a fraction of a panel can’t be installed, you’ll either have to use 16 panels or 17 panels.

If you use 16 panels instead of 17, you will end up with an 8.64 kW solar system. This downsized system will not meet all your energy requirements, lowering your savings and increasing your reliance on expensive grid electricity.

To resolve these issues, SolarSquare launched a 9.18 kW solar system composed of 17 540-watt solar panels (9,180 ÷ 540 = 17). Our 9.18 kW solar system eliminates panel-mismatch issues, powers high-load homes without a glitch, generates more units per day, and delivers higher solar savings.

Conclusion

The 9 kW solar panel price in India with subsidy for on-grid solar systems ranges between ~Rs. 4.02 lakh* in Lucknow, ~Rs. 4.12 lakh* in Delhi, ~Rs. 4.32 lakh* in Pune, and ~Rs. 4.92 lakh* in Bangalore. While most Indian states receive a solar subsidy of Rs. 78,000 for a 9 kW solar system, Delhi and UP residents can claim a higher amount of Rs. 1.08 lakh because the state governments offer an additional subsidy of Rs. 30,000.

*Please note: The above-mentioned 9 kW solar panel price in India with subsidy is indicative as of 7th November 2025 for the SolarSquare Blue 6ft variant. The final 9 kW on-grid solar system price in India depends on your DISCOM charges, city, product variant opted for, panel type, inverter type, mounting structure height, type of after-sales service, savings guarantee, roof height, etc. Prices are subject to change.

FAQs

Q1. How many units per day does a 9 kW solar system produce?

Ans. Based on the yearly generation of 12,600 to 13,050 units, a 9 kW solar system can generate ~35 to ~36 units daily. The daily output, however, is never uniform. It’s higher in summer and lower in monsoon. But over the full year, the variation evens out, and you get consistent performance as long as your system is maintained properly.

Q2. What is the difference between TOPCon and bifacial solar panels?

Ans. TOPCon is a solar cell technology that improves efficiency and long-term performance. Bifacial refers to the panel design that captures sunlight from both front and back. One is about cell structure, and the other is about how the panel collects light. In simple terms, even a TOPCon panel can be bifacial.

Q3. Which solar panel is best in 2025?

Ans. Mono-PERC and TOPCon solar panels with half-cut designs are considered the best because they have higher efficiency ratings, perform well at high temperatures, and deliver output even if half the panel is covered by shade.
